Hospitalized patients with moderate COVID-19 disease appeared to have better clinical outcomes with early aspirin use (within the first day of hospitalization), suggested data from the National Institute of Health’s National COVID Cohort Collaborative.

The observational cohort study included 112 269 hospitalized patients with moderate COVID-19, enrolled between January 1, 2020, and September 10, 2021, at 64 health systems in the United States.

The study revealed that early aspirin use was tied to lower in-hospital mortality rate by 28 days (10.2% vs 11.8% with no aspirin; OR 0.85) and there was no significant increase in hemorrhagic complications, such as GI or cerebral bleeding. Patients who received aspirin also had significantly lower rate of pulmonary embolism, but not deep vein thrombosis (1.0% vs 1.4%; OR 0.71). The findings are published in JAMA Network Open… (Medpage Today; JAMA Netw Open. 2022;5(3):e223890.)
